2019 Season Burning Questions

Mort and Andy got together to answer some burning questions for the 2019 baseball season before today’s season opener. So here are some of our hottest takes. Enjoy the game today and let us know where you fall on these on Twitter @SidedSox or email us SoxSided@Gmail.com.

White Sox win total in 2019

Mort

81, this team will put up runs and the bullpen looks to be one of the better in the league. Santana and Nova will add value in the starting rotation. This team should flirt with .500 and possibly push for a wild-card spot.

Andy

I’ll say 79 wins. Just under .500 ball here. The improved bullpen, additions of Eloy, Nova, and Alonso, growth in Giolito, Moncada, Lopez, Rodon, and Palka, plus the dreadful AL central leads to a decent season. I won’t be shocked if they reach 85 wins.

Over/Under 161.5 Games managed by Ricky Renteria?

Mort

Over, I think (hope) he’s done after the year but I am not sure I see the front office moving on from him in the season unless the manager of the future is getting eyes and the White Sox need to act fast.

Andy

over. He’ll be the manager all season. It’s a crucial year for Renteria. He hasn’t had any talent in the past couple seasons but we’ve also seen very little growth in the kids. If that continues this season, he absolutely deserves to be let go.

Which starting pitcher will lead the team in wins this season?

Mort

Ervin Santana, he is only one year separated from a 16 win season, and all last year was a wash due to injury.

Andy

Lopez, I think he takes another positive step forward. I think he can be a 13-15 game winner with an ERA in the 3.50 range. I think Rodon has the best stuff, but he’ll be facing other teams top pitchers mostly and I don’t trust him to stay healthy all year.

White Sox All-Star representative

Mort

Eloy, he would be my prediction for American League rookie of the year, with every team having to have a representative and with how stacked bullpens are I can see Eloy as the teams representative.

Andy

Abreu is my answer. He’s a proven elite bat with a couple All-Stars under his belt. Plus, the AL is very weak at 1B. Matt Olsen just got injured, Miguel Cabrera is on a sharp decline. Only guys to really challenge him will be Voit, Smoak, and Santana. I like Jose’s odds.

Over/Under 3.5 trades from March 28th until July 31st (players on 40 man roster)

Mort

under, I think it may be three but not four, I also think that one of the trades will be a big addition to the team from now going forward as the free agent market shrivels as the days go on.

Andy

I’ll go under here as well. Maybe possibly trade a BP arm or two away near the deadline for more prospects. Maybe if Sox are good and competing, they’ll make a big splash for a big name player but I doubt it.

Over/Under 3.5, different fielding positions started by Yolmer Sanchez

Mort

under, under because the only one who doesn’t seem to value the fact that Yolmer can play multiple positions is the guy making out the lineup card.

Andy

I’ll go over here. I think Yolmer has proven to be an asset and can give many guys days off throughout the year. The Sox version of Zobrist can and will play 4+ positions this year and will have some fantasy baseball value!

Will Dylan Cease make his MLB debut before or after August 1st?

Mort

No, Dylan will probably make his debut around mid-August as the White Sox have done with other pitcher prospects under this rebuild.

Andy

after. Honestly, I don’t think we see him this year. I think they’re going easy on the young arms after all the injuries (Kopech and Dunning).

Over/under 180.5 Yoan Moncada strikeouts

Mort

under, just under I think he will be more aggressive earlier in the count which should lead to more contact earlier in the count.

Andy

under. I think Yoan takes that next step and we see significant improvement. He was very unlucky last year on called third strikes. If that levels out, we’ll see a huge improvement already. I say 150ks.

Over/under 89.5 walks given out by Lucas Giolito

Mort

Under, I think Giolito has figured out the hitch in his delivery and realizes that this may be a make or break season for him. Also if his control is off and his walks and runs against are high again I wouldn’t be shocked to see Lucas optioned back to AAA to work on his stuff and figure out what he will be going forward.

Andy

definitely under. He’s either improving and being the pitcher he was traded to be or continues to miss the strike zone and goes to the bullpen or minors. I think the leash for Giolito is short this year. Has all the talent in the world but is living in his own head.

Over/Under 28.5 home runs for Eloy Jimenez

Mort

over this kid has a power stroke and can hit to all fields, if his bat control is there I can see Eloy flirting with 40 home runs, especially playing a full season of home games in Chicago.

Andy

I’ll say just under. 26 or 27 bombs from the Phenom. I think he’s very capable of 35+ but he has to learn major league pitching on the fly. There will be ups and downs.

What class does Luis Robert end the season at?

Mort

AAA, I think this is the year that Robert stays healthy and as there is a clear need at centerfield. Robert will be promoted as he performs at each level and this team may be angling to get him to the majors at some point in 2020.

Andy

I’ll say AAA. If he can finally stay healthy for the season and does his thing, I won’t be shocked if he gets some sort of August call up.
